Podouke Emporion

Dont be amazed by the title, It just as weird as it's common name Palaverkadu or Pulicat Lake as it is called now. Let me describe here it's birth in 1st Century some anonymous writer described this lake and our famous voyager Ptolomey gave it PODOUKE EMPORION in 2nd Century and followed by the Arab's in 13th century but they to didnt write it down (no blogging at that time he he he)and finally these Portuguese had some peanut brains and they built the church(it's no longer there but the transcripts from the chruch gave a good study of Pulicat)in 1531 as a final descendants the Dutch said hi and they looked at the spot for 2 villages KARIMANAL near Andhra (Sand is black due to high mineral content) and Pulicat (pallaicatta) in Tamil Nadu. Whats funny is that they did not use the abundant resource and build a Tomb and went off and it was handed over to Madras Presidency(1616 -1643)

Now lets get a bit Technical, They say it's a lake some say backwaters and some brackish water, but the fact is it's actually a lagoon. What is a lagoon (A water body with feeds from a river and stays there the salt water enters from the sea from one end and they mix and become salt water fully and finally flows back into the sea). Simply it's a seawater but its not sea. The Size of the lake is quite massive 461 sq.km (half Chennai CMDA's area) but the whole lagoon is at the max is 1.5 mt deep. As i said the lagoon is feeded by 3 rivers Arani River, Kalangi River and Swarnamukhi River. There are many small and large Islands in the lagoon but they are uninhabitable because of high tide and low tide water levels. It houses the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary where u can see Duck billed pelicans and Flamingos. But the alarming situation is that it is fast Depleting. Our people always over do the work (come on we got a lagoon we will fish as much as we can and get richer faster we will put houses there and will dump all garbage into it) that's what they do now.

To stop all these nonsense they introduced What is called as a PADU system. The lagoon is 16% in TamilNadu and rest in Andhra. the fisher community Braincells made a plan and formed a community and association that we will only fish no outsiders will fish and each one has a designated area in the lake and the number of times is limited. Thus PADU helped a lot saving Pulicat Lake. With a Production of 1200 tonnes a fish, Prawns and Jelly fishes it's threat are chemicals from fish treating plant, Salt accumulating plants, Settlement Pollution and this been happening over a century the tourism department is still discussing about taking this place in control.. GOD KNOWS WHEN.......

Local Consulting Engineer to the Madras Harbour

With more than 20,000 employed on the first go, everyone thought it was prestigious to work for a port. Without knowing that they are digging the own grave for their country. First they discussed to put the port 45 miles north of Madras, but dismissed the idea on the ground of the futility of expecting to divert the trade of an old- established city to a new port. With Estimated cost of Rs. 1,06,20,325 to construct the first phase actually it went 3 times more for the 1st phase alone b’coz of the mistake from an engineering team. Anyways it’s not their money it all ours; keep collecting the taxes from us and keep mistaking the engineering decisions. All the Tax rules were bent and restructured to the take more taxes to coupe the increasing expenses. This mistake the documentation which claims because of the French engineer cost also 1200 lives and 3 missing. Costly Mistake……

Another Interesting fact is that the proposal was submitted on 1660’s for the construction of the port and they kept on discussing discussing and discussing and finally after 100 years they said ok proceed the construction started in 1740’s and completed in 16th January 1869 and Submitted a Document named “Official Paper of Construction of Madras Port” which is only available rarely. It’s actually the same French Engineer who made the mistake made a complete manuscript. It’s actually in three places (Higginbotham’s gov collection; California Some Library and in Internet). Anyway its their official releases don’t worry….

Need the complete document… mail me at gowtham.siddharth@gmail.com

See ya.

The Battle of Adyar

NOW

BEFORE

The Battle of Adyar River (7 November 1746) --- Till Date

This is not about the Daily Traffic Battle and Mosquito Battle that we now face near Adyar River, Actually there was a real Battle that took place on the either banks of Adyar River... Funny Ri8.

The Story goes This way.... British and French were like peeping into Chennai just like our Software companies doing now, As always one company wanted to kick other's butt using our Indian workers is a known fact, You wonder where this tradition is from the answer THE BATTLE OF ADYAR, fought between October and November 1746 7th november Being the last date for submitting the applications oops sorry last date of the war, it was fought between Frech -led Indian sipahis and thousands of forces of British with Nawab of Arcot (The Traitor) . Unlike our Present day Captians movie (one bullet killing two persons) the French won the Battle because they were disciplined and had cannons from which the British learned a lot. But then british rolled up their slevees and came kicking back to washout french (Thats an another Issue but)

But the Grimm turth is that once a Adyar Forest department reporting 50 Species of Birds in the Scantuary with a sport of Bird Watching on top of Old Elphinstone Brige 1840, could you ever image how it is now and what was it before. That bridge now blocked at both ends by a jungle overgrown with wild vegetation nourished by the public latrine it is used as, is what the optimists hope can be developed into a beautiful promenade with small parks at both ends, seating arrangements and facilities for bird watching. (Dreaming is still free, isn't it?)

The Battle of Adyar is Still to be Fought.....

Madarasa Suthi Paka Poren

The Bank of Madras in 1935

Now wonder we keep 4 -5 Atm cards with or without Balance, Credit Cards 2 -3 some had 11, a wallet full of Plastic Toxic Money but it all started here the Bank of Madras.

The Photo is Old but not Old as the Bank itself. Established in July 1 1843 was the only bank along with its three subsidiaries carried out all commercial activities like normal day to day transactions government Accounts and also operated as a Central Bank in case of its non-existence. The Bank had Branches all over South India in Places like Bangalore, Nagapattinam,Tutucorin, Cochi, Allpey, Guntur, Ooty and guess what in Colombo, Srilanka (Prabakaran wasn't born at that time --- Damn Sure)

The Head office was Shifited to this buliding in 1897 in South Beach Road, Chennai the Huge monster Site was acqiured for a wooping 100,000 Rupees and was constructed by Namperumal Chetty, a reputed Builder for 300,000 Rupees. (Sky High Real estate is not new to Chennai)

Now the Building is Still alive now holds State Bank of India Main office and Several other Bank offices. With Cash flowing in and out of the Building for say for more than 100 years i am sure every brick smell as a fresh rupee note. (Worth Trying... Seriously)

Happy and Safe Banking......
